Oral Health Program

Do you know the most common chronic disease affecting Michigan children? Tooth Decay.

brushing teethThe Michigan Caries Prevention Program (MCPP) is offering free training and support tools to implement preventive oral health services during well-child visits. Funded under a federal grant, the training program supports primary care providers and their clinical staff in efforts to improve oral health care for children.

Currently, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians recommend primary care physicians apply fluoride varnish once primary tooth eruption occurs for all children. Another important step in preventing dental disease for patients is to ensure the establishment of a dental home by age 1.

To support primary care providers and clinical staff in preventing pediatric dental disease, the MCPP will be offering the following at no cost:

  • Smiles for Life certification: Providers will be eligible for up to $23 in reimbursement from Medicaid for providing preventive oral health services
  • Comprehensive technical assistance
  • Starter kit of fluoride varnish
  • An electronic dentist referral and patient tracking tool

The Michigan Caries Prevention Program was created by Altarum Institute (creator of the Michigan Care Improvement Registry [MCIR]) in collaboration with Delta Dental of Michigan, the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, to improve the oral health of 1M children insured by Medicaid/MIChild across the state.
